Cathodic protection systems generally use either galvanic anodes or an impressed current system. CP is commonly associated with assets such as buried or submerged pipelines, tanks, marine structures, and other metallic infrastructure where appropriate.

What is galvanic corrosion?

Galvanic corrosion can occur when dissimilar materials are electrically connected in the presence of an electrolyte. The more active member of the galvanic couple acts anodically and can experience accelerated corrosion.

The severity of galvanic corrosion depends on multiple factors, including the materials involved, environment, electrical connection, electrolyte, and relative exposed areas.

What is passivation?

Passivation describes a condition in which a metal’s corrosion rate is substantially reduced because of a protective surface film or passive state.

Stainless steels are a familiar example: their corrosion resistance depends substantially on a thin chromium-rich passive film. Whether passivity remains stable depends on the material and environment.
