Driving Change: AMPP Advocacy Day 2024 Shapes Industry’s Future Through Strategic Policy Engagement and Global Collaboration

In May 2024, more than 50 materials-protection professionals gathered in Washington, D.C., to bring corrosion control, protective coatings, infrastructure, workforce development, and defense priorities directly to policymakers.

AMPP Advocacy Day combined policy training, relationship-building, meetings on Capitol Hill, and discussions with international stakeholders. The goal was straightforward: help decision-makers understand how materials protection affects the infrastructure, assets, workforce, and systems communities depend on.

Day One: Preparing Advocates for Capitol Hill

The event began with an orientation at the Courtyard Marriott Navy Yard, where participants reviewed the advocacy agenda, met fellow attendees, and prepared for the congressional meetings ahead.

AMPP CEO Alan Thomas opened the training by emphasizing the value of communicating directly with policymakers about the role corrosion control and materials protection play in infrastructure and national security.

Participants received an overview of the issues they would discuss on Capitol Hill, then used group introductions and planning exercises to coordinate their meetings and messaging.

The first day concluded with an opening reception at Silver Social, giving attendees additional time to build relationships across industries and technical specialties before the following day’s meetings.

Day Two: Taking Materials Protection to Capitol Hill

On the second day, participants met with congressional offices and policymakers to discuss issues affecting corrosion prevention, coatings, workforce development, defense assets, and infrastructure.

These meetings gave practitioners an opportunity to explain how policy decisions can affect the people, technologies, standards, training programs, and asset-management strategies used throughout the materials-protection field.

Why Industry Advocacy Matters

Policymakers make decisions about infrastructure investment, workforce programs, defense readiness, procurement, standards, education, and other issues that can directly affect the corrosion and coatings community.

Technical professionals can contribute context that may not otherwise be obvious: why corrosion prevention needs to be considered early, how workforce shortages affect asset maintenance, what specialized training is required, or how materials-performance decisions influence lifecycle cost and reliability.

AMPP’s 2024 Legislative Priorities

Three major federal priorities formed the core of AMPP Advocacy Day discussions in 2024. These items are presented here as a historical record of that year’s advocacy agenda.

Advocacy Beyond Capitol Hill

The 2024 event also included meetings focused on international collaboration and the role materials protection can play in global infrastructure and economic development.

AMPP participants also met with international and public-private stakeholders during the 2024 advocacy program.

Delegates engaged with organizations and offices including the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Materials Industries, USAID, ANSI public-private partnership and international development representatives, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Energy Institute, and other stakeholders.

These conversations reflected the international nature of materials protection: corrosion, coatings, standards, infrastructure resilience, workforce development, and asset performance are not confined to national borders.

Why Technical Voices Are Useful in Policy Discussions

Legislation is often discussed at a high level. Practitioners can help translate policy into real-world consequences by explaining what happens at the asset level.

Advocacy Is Another Way to Protect the Assets We Depend On

AMPP Advocacy Day 2024 was built around a simple idea: the people who understand corrosion, coatings, inspection, materials, asset integrity, and workforce requirements can provide useful technical context to the people developing public policy.

That does not mean every member or policymaker will approach an issue the same way. It means that informed participation can help ensure materials protection is part of conversations about infrastructure, defense, workforce development, sustainability, and long-term asset performance.
