Hand and power tools are so familiar that their hazards can be easy to underestimate. Safe use depends on more than experience—it requires the right tool, the right condition, the right environment, and the right precautions for the task.
Whether tools are being used on a coatings project, construction site, maintenance job, or home project, injuries can occur when equipment is damaged, misused, poorly guarded, used in an unsuitable environment, or operated without appropriate protective measures.

11 Practical Tips for Safer Hand and Power Tool Use
The details of safe operation vary by tool, task, and workplace. These principles provide a useful starting point, but manufacturer instructions, employer procedures, applicable regulations, and project-specific hazard assessments should govern the work.
01 · USE APPROPRIATE PPE
Match protection to the hazard
Personal protective equipment may include safety glasses or goggles, hearing protection, protective footwear, face protection, respiratory protection, head protection, or other equipment depending on the task.
Gloves require particular judgment around powered or rotating equipment. While they may protect against some hazards, loose or inappropriate gloves can create entanglement risks around moving parts. Follow the tool manufacturer’s instructions and the applicable hazard assessment.
PPE IS NOT THE FIRST OR ONLY CONTROL
Where hazards can be eliminated, reduced, isolated, guarded, or otherwise controlled before relying on PPE, those measures should be considered as part of the overall safety approach.
02 · DRESS FOR THE TASK
Prevent clothing and hair from becoming hazards
Loose clothing, jewelry, lanyards, neckties, unsecured long hair, and other dangling items can become caught in moving equipment. Secure or remove anything that could interfere with the task, and choose footwear appropriate for the surface and work environment.
03 · KNOW THE TOOL BEFORE USING IT
Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
Users should understand the tool’s intended purpose, operating controls, guards, accessories, limitations, shutdown procedure, and required protective measures before beginning work. Familiarity with one tool does not automatically translate to a different model or application.
04 · INSPECT TOOLS BEFORE USE
Damaged equipment should not simply be “worked around”
Inspect tools and accessories for conditions that could affect safe operation. Depending on the equipment, this may include damaged cords, cracked housings, missing guards, loose components, worn blades or discs, damaged plugs, defective switches, leaking batteries, or other visible defects.
Tools that are damaged or operating abnormally should be removed from service and evaluated, repaired, or replaced by an appropriate person.
05 · KEEP THE WORK AREA CONTROLLED

Clutter, cords, hoses, scrap material, unstable workpieces, poor access, combustible materials, and people entering the work area can all increase risk. Keep the immediate work zone organized and provide appropriate separation from children, bystanders, or other workers who are not involved in the task.
06 · HANDLE POWER SOURCES CAREFULLY
Prevent unintended startup and cord damage
Do not carry a corded tool by its power cord or use the cord to disconnect the plug. Keep cords away from heat, sharp edges, moving equipment, traffic, and other conditions that could damage them.
Before connecting a tool to its power source, confirm that its controls are in the appropriate position. Keep fingers away from operating switches or triggers while carrying or repositioning equipment.
CONTROL UNEXPECTED ENERGY
Disconnect or isolate the power source before making adjustments when required.
Changing blades, bits, discs, accessories, clearing jams, servicing equipment, or performing other tasks may require unplugging the tool, removing the battery, or using another energy-isolation procedure. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and workplace procedures.
07 · SHUT DOWN AND STORE TOOLS SAFELY
Do not leave equipment energized unnecessarily
When the task is finished, shut the tool down and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for disconnecting or securing it. Store tools so they cannot be unintentionally activated or accessed by unauthorized users or children.
08 · PROVIDE ADEQUATE VISIBILITY
You need to see both the work and the hazard zone
Lighting should allow the operator to clearly see the tool, workpiece, cutting or contact area, controls, surrounding obstacles, and other relevant conditions. Position supplemental lighting so it does not introduce glare, shadows, damaged cords, or another new hazard.
09 · USE ELECTRICAL TOOLS AS DESIGNED
Do not improvise electrical protection
Grounded tools should be connected to properly grounded systems as designed. Double-insulated tools should be used according to their labeling and manufacturer instructions. Never defeat a grounding pin, modify a plug, or improvise a grounding connection.
Electrical tools used in damp, wet, outdoor, construction, or other higher-risk environments may require ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection or other controls. Do not assume that standing on an insulating object or trying to keep your hands dry makes an unsuitable electrical setup safe.
WET CONDITIONS REQUIRE MORE THAN EXTRA CAUTION
If a tool, extension cord, receptacle, battery system, or work environment is not suitable for the conditions, stop and use equipment and protective measures designed for that environment rather than improvising a workaround.
10 · MAINTAIN CONTROL AND STABLE POSITIONING
Do not sacrifice balance for reach
Use appropriate handles and grips, maintain secure footing, and position the work so you can control the tool without excessive reaching or awkward body mechanics. Secure the workpiece when needed instead of trying to control both the material and the tool at the same time.
If a tool is too heavy, powerful, unstable, or difficult to control for the planned operation, reassess the setup rather than forcing the task.
11 · DO NOT OPERATE TOOLS WHEN YOU CANNOT FOCUS
Fatigue, impairment, distraction, and frustration affect safety
Do not operate tools when alcohol, drugs, medications, illness, significant fatigue, distraction, or another condition may impair judgment, coordination, reaction time, or concentration. If frustration is leading to rushed or aggressive tool use, stop the task and return when it can be performed deliberately and safely.
A Quick Pre-Use Tool Check
BEFORE OPERATING THE TOOL, ASK:
- Is this the correct tool for the task?
- Is the tool in good condition?
- Are guards and other protective features installed and functioning?
- Is the blade, disc, bit, accessory, or attachment appropriate and correctly installed?
- Is the workpiece secure?
- Is the area adequately lit and free of unnecessary obstructions?
- Are electrical cords, batteries, hoses, and power sources suitable for the environment?
- Is the required PPE available and appropriate?
- Could sparks, dust, debris, noise, or movement affect someone nearby?
- Do I understand the shutdown or emergency procedure?
Do Not Defeat Guards or Safety Features
Machine guards, trigger locks, shields, auxiliary handles, interlocks, and other safety features are part of the tool’s design. Removing or bypassing them can expose the operator to hazards the equipment was specifically designed to control.
If a guard prevents the planned operation from being performed, that is a reason to reconsider the tool or method—not automatically a reason to remove the guard.
STOP BEFORE YOU IMPROVISE
The safest workaround may be a different tool, accessory, setup, or process.
Modifying equipment, defeating protective features, using an incorrect accessory, or operating outside the manufacturer’s intended use can create hazards that were not part of the original design.
The Same Tool Can Present Different Risks on Different Jobs
A drill used at a workbench presents a different set of risks from the same drill used from a ladder, inside a tank, near combustible materials, in a damp area, or around other trades.
That is why tool safety should be based on the complete task—not simply on whether the operator knows how to switch the tool on and off.

Familiarity Should Not Replace Caution
Experience can make tool use more efficient, but it can also make hazards feel routine. Many of the most useful safety habits are simple: inspect the equipment, secure the work, keep guards in place, maintain control, use appropriate PPE, manage electrical hazards correctly, and stop when the conditions are not right.
The goal is not to be afraid of the tool. It is to understand what the tool can do, what can go wrong, and how the task can be performed with appropriate controls in place.
